The Club Deportivo Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba is the only top division club in Mendoza . The club has played in the Primera División since the 2008/09 season . In Argentina the club is known as "El Tomba" or "El Expreso". Godoy Cruz is the largest club in the Cuyo region .

history

In 1921, in Bar Victoria in Mendoza, the idea of founding a sports club was born. On June 21, 1921, the Club Sportivo Godoy Cruz was founded, and Romeo Garay became its first president. In the following years the club developed into one of the best football clubs in the region and boxing, chess and cycling could be included in the club's program. In 1923 the Club Sportivo Godoy Cruz was finally merged with the Club Deportivo Bodega Antonio Tomba, so that an association with better opportunities could arise. From then on, basketball was also operated in the new club. Due to the improved financial possibilities in the new club, Club Deportivo Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba, the construction of a new sports area could already be realized on November 1, 1923. A stadium with a capacity of 11,000 was built, as well as tennis courts, a basketball hall and a bocce court. This new sports facility was one of the most modern in Argentina at the time. Due to the professionalized conditions, "El Tomba" developed together with Independiente Rivadavia to become Mendoza's best club. This led to the rivalry between the two clubs, which continues to this day.

Under the presidency of the former boxing trainer Feliciano Gambarte , the club achieved a new financial dimension due to the large number of new members. On October 3, 1959, today's Feliciano Gambarte stadium was completed. However, the club did not manage to make the step into the top Argentine league until promotion in 2006. So the club achieved many local successes, but not more. In 2006 the redeeming step into the Primera Division, the first Argentinian league, finally succeeded. In two play-offs, Nueva Chicago was beaten 3-1 after extra time in Mendoza after a 1-1 draw in the first leg. Tanque Gimenez , who is still highly regarded in Mendoza today, was the decisive man with his two goals in the last game. After the ascent, 40,000 people flocked to central Mendoza to celebrate the ascent. In the Primera Division the club could not establish itself and so "El Tomba" rose again after losing relegation against Huracán. However, the immediate promotion succeeded, so Godoy Cruz played again in the Primera Division in 2008/2009.

On December 14, 2011, the previous Uruguayan coach Jorge da Silva announced his resignation despite qualifying for the Copa Libertadores . On Christmas Eve 2011, Nery Pumpido was presented as the successor.

Fans & name

The association is commonly called "El Expreso", "El Bodeguero" or "El Tomba". Through the merger in 1923, the club developed into a football power in Mendoza, which is why the name "El Expreso" was created. The designation "El Bodeguero" or "El Tomba", however, has to do with the person Antonio Tomba. Antonio Tomba was born in Italy in 1849 and is still an important figure in Godoy Cruz today, as he brought viticulture to Mendoza, among other things. He brought the necessary know-how from Italy with him to take advantage of the favorable conditions in Mendoza. In Godoy Cruz he was not only fondly remembered for this reason, but also because he brought about the construction of a hospital and the establishment of the sports club “Club Deportivo Bodega Antonio Tomba”.

Stadion

In the Nacional B, Argentina's second division, Tomba almost always played at the Estadio Feliciano Gambarte, which has a capacity of 21,000. However, the club almost always moved to the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas for important games , which was built for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina and has a capacity of 40,268 spectators. In the Primera Division, Tomba has only played in the Estadio Malvinas so far, as the interest of the Mendocinos is much greater than before.
