The Club Atlético Newell's Old Boys , usually only Newell's called, is a football club from Rosario in the province of Santa Fe in Argentina .

history

The football club was founded on November 3, 1903 and is named after Isaac Newell, a former football coach and director of the English High School in Rosario.

The club colors red and black were borrowed from the flags of Great Britain and Germany, as Isaac Newell himself was British and his wife German. The football club's first men's team is often called " los leprosos ", which is attributed to a charity game held in the 1920s for the benefit of a leprosy clinic.

The football club's best-known pupil is the Argentine international Lionel Messi .

National The Newell's Old Boy 'have won the Argentine Championship six times : Metropolitano 1974, 1987/88, 1990/91, Clausura 1992, Apertura 2004, 2013.

Internationally in 1988 and 1992 the football club was runner-up in the Copa Libertadores .

Stadion

The home stadium is in the neighborhood of Parque Independencia in Rosario. It is called " El Coloso del Parque ". Since the renovations carried out in 1997, it has a capacity of 42,000 places.
