Óscar René Cardozo Marín (born May 20, 1983 in Juan Eulogio Estigarribia , Caaguazú ) is a Paraguayan - Portuguese football player .

Career

society

Cardozo began his career in 2003 with the Paraguayan CA 3 de Febrero before moving to Club Nacional , where he played from 2004 to 2006. After moving to Newell's Old Boys , he made his debut in the Argentine first division on August 6, 2006 against Vélez Sársfield . By June 2007 Cardozo was able to achieve 47 goals in 86 games, 20 of them in the 32 games for Newell's Old Boys. In 2006 he was named Paraguayan Footballer of the Year . In the Torneo Clausura 2007 Cardozo was after Martín Palermo from CA Boca Juniors with nine goals the most successful goalscorer in the Primera Division.

In June 2007, Tacuara , as Cardozo is called by his fans, moved from Newell's Old Boys to Portugal to Benfica Lisbon for just under 9.165 million euros , making it the second most expensive purchase in the club's history. With Benfica he was able to win the Portuguese League Cup twice and the championship for the first time in 2010 . In 2009 Cardozo was again voted Paraguay's Footballer of the Year. In the championship season 2009/10 he was the top scorer of the Sagres League with 26 goals . In the same year he was the top scorer in the UEFA Europa League with nine goals scored together with Claudio Pizarro from Werder Bremen . In the 2011/12 season Cardozo was again top scorer in the Portuguese league with 20 goals. In the Europa League 2012/13 he scored six goals in eight games and thus played a major role in Benfica's entry into the final.

In summer 2014 he moved to the Turkish club Trabzonspor . On the last day of the 2016 summer transfer period, he was signed by the Greek record champions Olympiacos Piraeus .

National team

In the Paraguayan national team Cardozo made his debut on October 7, 2006 against Australia . He scored his first goal on June 6, 2007 in a 1-0 win against Mexico .

Cardozo took part in the 2007 Copa America and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa .
