Darko Kovačević ( Serbian - Cyrillic Дарко Ковачевић , born November 18, 1973 in Kovin , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Serbian football player . He was particularly characterized by his headball strength and his athleticism.
Career
In the club
Darko Kovačević began his career with Proleter Zrenjanin . Between 1994 and 1995 he played for FK Red Star Belgrade , where he made his breakthrough, and won the Yugoslav Championship and the Yugoslav Cup with the team.
He then moved to the English first division club Sheffield Wednesday and then to Real Sociedad in Spain .
In 1999 Darko Kovačević was signed by the Italian record champions Juventus Turin . At Juve he was under contract for two years and twice just missed winning the Italian championship with the team . In the 1999/2000 season he was, despite Juves Aus in the round of 16, with ten goals in eight games top scorer in the UEFA Cup .
For the 2001/02 season Juventus signed the Chilean Marcelo Salas from Lazio Rome , as part of this transfer Kovačević moved in return to the capital club. At Lazio, however, he did not come to the train and therefore returned to his old club Real Sociedad during the season. In the 2002/03 season he found back to his old form with 20 goals in 36 league games, but then his goal yield decreased. At the end of the 2006/07 season he was relegated with his club and then moved to Olympiacos in Greece in the summer of 2007 , where he received a one-year contract. His contract was renewed; Kovačević was one of the top performers at the Greek champions. He was diagnosed with heart problems during the 2008-09 season. He was then operated on in Spain on January 13, 2009, and the operation went well.
In the national team
Darko Kovačević completed his first international game on December 27, 1994 in a 1-0 draw against Argentina , a total of 59 games for Serbia and Montenegro and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia , scoring ten goals and taking part in the 1998 World Cup in France .
After finishing his career as a football player
Currently Darko Kovačević is head of the scouting team at Olympiacos and technical advisor to the administrative department of Olympiacos.
