He then moved to the English first division club Sheffield Wednesday and then to Real Sociedad in Spain .

At the end of the 2006/07 season he was relegated with his club and then moved to Olympiacos in Greece in the summer of 2007 , where he received a one-year contract. His contract was renewed; Kovačević was one of the top performers at the Greek champions. He was diagnosed with heart problems during the 2008-09 season.
