The 1972/73 UEFA Cup was the second edition of the competition and was won by Liverpool in the final against Borussia Mönchengladbach . The competition, in which 64 club teams took part, was played in six rounds in home and return matches. For the first time, four clubs from Germany qualified directly through the Bundesliga. In the event of a tie, the number of goals scored away decided first, followed by overtime and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out.
