Roberto Boninsegna (born November 13, 1943 in Mantua ) is a former Italian football player .
Career
It took striker Roberto Boninsegna a few years to work his way from lower-class clubs to the top of Italy in the 1960s. He came to the Sardinian club Cagliari Calcio in 1966 via AC Prato , Potenza SC and Varese FC . Together with Luigi Riva , he made the club a top Italian club, but left it for the 1969/70 season for Inter Milan . From then on, Riva and Boninsegna only formed a feared storm duo in the Italian national team . In 1970 Cagliari Calcio became Italian champions for the first and only time without Boninsegna.
Boninsegna, however, played a good world tournament at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico in the same year . In the 8th minute he scored the 1-0 for Italy in the game of the century between Italy and Germany, which lasted up to the 92nd minute, and moved into the final against Brazil thanks to the 4-3 win . Here, too, he scored the 1-1 goal in the 1: 4 defeat.
For German football fans, Roberto Boninsegna remains in negative memories of the rifle throwing game in October 1971. In the round of 16 of the European Cup between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Inter Milan, a spectator threw a can of drinks at the player Boninsegna when the score was 2: 1 for the Gladbacher, who then collapsed and let himself be carried off the pitch in the 28th minute. At the time, viewers and commentators rated this as acting. Borussia Mönchengladbach sensationally won the game 7-1, UEFA later annulled the result. In a replay in Berlin , the Gladbachers did not get beyond a 0-0. In the 89th minute, Boninsegna fouled Ludwig Müller severely and broke his shin and fibula. Since they lost the first leg in Milan 2-4, they were eliminated. Boninsegna, on the other hand, moved into the final with Inter later and lost to Ajax Amsterdam .
In 1974 Boninsegna returned to Germany for the 1974 World Cup . However, it was only used once. When Italy were 2-0 down against Poland in the decisive preliminary round match , Boninsegna came on after the half-time break. However, the game was lost 2-1 and runner-up world champions Italy drove home disappointed. A novelty in this game was the yellow card, which Boninsegna received before the start of the game for unsportsmanlike conduct.
1976 changed Boninsegna for three years from Inter Milan to major competitors Juventus , where he 1976-77 under coach Giovanni Trapattoni at the side of Roberto Bettega and Franco Causio the UEFA Cup and 1976/77 and 1977/78 the Scudetto won. He ended his active career in 1980 at Hellas Verona .
