Giampiero Boniperti (born July 4, 1928 in Barengo (NO) , † June 18, 2021 in Turin ) was an Italian football player and official. He was a successful striker and later president of Juventus Turin . From 1994 to 1999 he was a member of Forza Italia in the European Parliament .

Career

Boniperti was counted among the great players in Italian football . Especially at his home club Juventus, he was one of the most charismatic and best players of all time. At the age of eighteen, influenced by Giovanni Agnelli , he moved to Turin and played his first game in this city on March 2, 1947. In his youth he had a friendship with Fausto Coppi .

In the 1947/48 season , Boniperti, at the age of 19, was the top scorer in Serie A with 27 goals . No top scorer in the Italian league was younger than Boniperti. By the end of his career in 1961, he played 444 games in Juventus' dress and scored 178 goals - both club records have now been broken and are now held by Alessandro Del Piero .

He was considered a player who acted with determination and tackling strength in his position as a center forward . Together with Omar Sívori and John Charles , he formed an extremely successful attacking trio, which is considered to be the most complete storm of Juventus to this day.

As a national player, Boniperti took part in the 1950 World Cup (1 game) and the 1954 World Cup (1 game / 1 goal).

After the 1960/61 season , Boniperti announced his retirement from active football at the age of 33 and soon switched to the management of the club of his heart - as he later described Juventus Turin in his autobiography. From July 13, 1971 he was President of Juventus Turin. Most supporters of the Turin record champions know Boniperti mainly because of this presidency. Under his leadership the first big victories in the European title competitions as well as the 20th championship title were achieved, which gave the club the second championship star . During his presidency, Giovanni Trapattoni was appointed coach and a few other Turin football legends such as Bettega , Scirea , Capello , Platini , Zoff , Rossi , Tardelli and Boniek .

On February 5, 1990, Boniperti announced his resignation from the management post. Until then, he had played a leading role in 14 championship titles for Juventus: five as an active player and another nine during his presidency. After his resignation, he was made Honorary President in Turin - albeit the last remaining after both Giovanni and Umberto Agnelli had died. In March 2004 he was voted one of the 125 best football players by Pelé .

During his time as MEP from 1994-1999, he was a member of the Committee on Culture and Education .

Boniperti died of heart failure in June 2021 at the age of 92 .
