Series A 1997/98

The Serie A 1998/99 was the 67th season in the top Italian football -Spielklasse of Lords. It started on September 13, 1998. The season ended with the 34th matchday on May 23, 1999. The Scudetto , the championship title, was won by AC Milan . Salernitana Sport , Sampdoria Genoa , Vicenza Calcio and FC Empoli had to relegate . The top scorer with 22 goals was Márcio Amoroso of Udinese Calcio .

Season course

After two years in the middle of Serie A, AC Milan managed to win the Scudetto after three years without a title. Giovanni Trapattoni , who has just returned to Italy from Bayern Munich , played for the top of the table with Fiorentina. The Fiorentina was at the top of the table 16 times before the performance level could no longer be maintained at the end of the season. In the end, he finished third and qualified for the Champions League. Reigning champions Juventus Turin experienced a disappointing season, who also fell short of expectations in Serie A after losing two finals in the Champions League (1997 1: 3 against Borussia Dortmund , 1998 0: 1 against Real Madrid ) finished seventh and qualified for the UEFA Intertoto Cup .

The season was different for Inter Milan. Started the season with high investments and ambitions, in the end you had to watch how the city rivals AC cheered the championship. For a long time the championship was a four-way battle, in the course of which Fiorentina and Parma soon had to admit defeat. Lazio, on the other hand, lost a 6 point lead and stumbled while AC Milan started to catch up. The Rossoneri were able to win the last seven games and catch the Romans from the top of the table on matchday 33. In addition to FC Empoli, Vicenza Calcio and the promoted Salernitana Sport, the former champion Sampdoria Genua, who had to go into Serie B eight years after winning the title, had to relegate .
