Roberto Fabián Ayala (born April 14, 1973 in Paraná ) is a former Argentine soccer player who played for Ferro Carril Oeste , CA River Plate , SSC Napoli , AC Milan , Valencia CF , Villarreal , Real Saragossa and Racing Club Avellaneda played. He won the Scudetto with AC Milan in 1999 , and Ayala won the Spanish championship with Valencia CF in 2002 and 2004 .

Career

In the club

Ayala played early in his career for Ferro Carril Oeste (1991-1994) and then for CA River Plate (1994-1995). After the end of the 1994/95 season, he moved to Europe for SSC Napoli (1995-1998) and then for AC Milan (1998-2000). As the first Argentine in more than 30 years at AC Milan, he often sat on the bench. In the first season at Milan he was used 13 times, Ayala completed a total of 24 games with the Milanese. With AC Milan he won the Italian championship , the Scudetto, in the 1998/99 season . In the summer of 2000 he signed a three-year contract with Valencia CF for a transfer of 6.5 million euros and, thanks to his outstanding performance, ensured that Valencia only conceded 34 goals in 38 games. In the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League final, Valencia and Ayala lost to Bayern Munich on penalties . The previous year they had already reached the final without Ayala, but failed there because of Real Madrid . The following year Ayala won the Spanish Championship and the Spanish Cup with Valencia. In February 2007 he announced his move to the new season and signed a contract with Villarreal until 2010. In July 2007, Real Zaragoza used a clause in Ayala's contract, according to which he can change immediately for 6 million euros. On February 2, 2010, Ayala returned home to Racing Club Avellaneda , having previously terminated his contract with Zaragoza. At the end of December 2010, he announced the end of his career.

In the national team

Ayala made his debut for the Argentine national soccer team in November 1994. Over the years Ayala advanced to become one of the most important players in the Argentine national team.

He played at the 1998 World Cup , where he safely converted his penalty in the round of 16 against England and was eliminated in the quarter-finals after five games with Argentina. At the 2002 World Cup , Ayala injured herself while warming up before the first game against Nigeria. On penalties in 2004 he won the gold medal with Argentina at the Olympic Games .

At the 2006 World Cup in Germany, he and Argentina reached the quarter-finals against hosts Germany. Ayala had put Argentina 1-0 ahead, Klose had equalized. Argentina lost 3-5 on penalties. In addition to Esteban Cambiasso , Roberto Ayala also missed a penalty against Jens Lehmann . Ayala regularly shoots his penalties after a long run-up into the right corner he saw, which Lehmann knew. Because of his good performances during the tournament, he was accepted by FIFA into the All-Star Team of the World Cup.

In July 2007 Ayala announced his resignation from the national team.
