Paraná is the capital of the Entre Ríos province in northeast Argentina . The city on the eastern bank of the Río Paraná across from Santa Fe has a population of 235,967 (as of 2001). It has been connected to Santa Fe since 1969 via the Ruta Nacional 168 and the Túnel Hernandarias under the Río Paraná. The tunnel was the first fixed crossing of the river in Argentina.
The agglomeration of Gran Paraná with the neighboring towns of San Benito, Oro Verde, Colonia Avellaneda and Sauce Montrull had a population of 247,310 in the 2001 census. According to a 2010 census, the agglomeration has 340,861 inhabitants.
Paraná is not only the seat of the provincial government, but also an important river port for the loading of grain, cattle, fish and timber from the area. The most important industries here are the production of cement, furniture and ceramics.
history
The exact year the city was founded is no longer known, as there is no charter. In the beginning the city was called Baxada de la otra Banda del Paraná and Baxada del Paraná . Baxada or Bajada as it is spelled today is the word used in local Spanish for a descent down to the river. The city's development has been fluid and is mainly based on the fact that it is located opposite the city of Santa Fe . The official founding date was later set to October 23, 1730 .
Paraná was the capital of the Confederación Argentina from 1852 to 1861, during the temporary secession of the province of Buenos Aires , and expanded extremely rapidly during this time. At that time the city had several churches, an elegant government palace and a theater, but in the second half of the 19th century, when it was again downgraded to the provincial capital, it made a desolate, ruined impression. At the end of the 19th century, the predominantly trading population was around 6,000.
