Leonforte is a town in Enna consortium of municipalities outside the region Sicily in Italy with 12,858 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Leonforte is located 18 km northeast of Enna at an altitude of 612 m. The residents mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring communities are Assoro , Calascibetta , Enna , Nicosia and Nissoria .

After rail traffic to Leonforte was discontinued in 1959, the city can only be reached by road today.

history

The place was founded in 1610 by Prince Nicolo Placido Branciforte.

Attractions

The center of the village is the Piazza Margherita. The church of San Giovanni Battista and the Branciforte palace from the 17th century are worth seeing. The Granfonte (large fountain) was created in 1651 by order of the city founder Branciforte on the outskirts of the city at that time. Built in the Sicilian Baroque style , it served as a large cattle trough.
