Calascibetta is a municipality in Enna consortium of municipalities outside the region Sicily in Italy with 4309 inhabitants (December 31, 2019).
Location and dates
Calascibetta is 6 km north of Enna and covers an area of 88.18 km². The main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture . The quarries in the area also offer work .
The neighboring communities are Bompietro ( PA ), Enna , Gangi ( PA ), Leonforte , Nicosia and Villarosa .
history
The area around the town of Calascibetta has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Necropolises , such as the Realmese necropolis , dating from the 9th century BC BC to the 6th century BC Was used, testify to it. The Arabs built a fortress, hence the name Kalet (fort) and Scibet, from which the current place name is derived. The city was only fortified by the Arabs in 841 and used as a base for the conquest of Enna. In the 11th century the city was greatly expanded. King Peter II of Sicily died in Calascibetta in August 1342 .
