history
Samtredia is located on the Poti – Baku railway that went into operation in 1872 and is the oldest railway line in Georgia. After the area around Batumi had been ceded by the Berlin Treaty of 1878 from the Ottoman Empire to the Russian Empire , the construction of a rail connection for Batumi began immediately. This branched off from the existing line in Samtredia. The city emerged around this branch station from 1874 and soon developed into an industrial center.
During the Georgian civil war in 1993, the city was occupied by the supporters of the former President Zviad Gamsakhurdia . The economic infrastructure was largely destroyed in attacks by government troops under Eduard Shevardnadze .
