The S-1 ( Georgian : ს -1) is the main thoroughfare in Georgia . It leads from the capital Tbilisi via Gori , Kutaisi and Sukhumi to the Russian border. There it continues as the M27 to Sochi . The road has a length of about 680 km.

The E60 runs between Mtskheta (north of Tbilisi) and Senaki together with the S-1. From Senaki the S-1 is part of the E97 and from Mtskheta it is part of the E117 .

history

In the times of the Soviet Union , this road was known as the M27 and ran over a distance of 1,439 km from Baku to Novorossiysk . It was thus one of the most important Trans- Caucasus routes. After 1991 the M27 was in three countries (Russia, Georgia and Azerbaijan ). The Russian part kept the old number. The Georgian section has been renumbered S1 and S4 and the Azerbaijani section is now called M1. The situation around Abkhazia , where a war raged in 1992 and 1993 that Georgia lost, is problematic .

In recent years, the S1 between Tbilisi and Chaschuri has been expanded to 2 × 2 lanes with crossings with no elevation. This part is modern and built according to Western European requirements.
