The S-3 at Gudauri | |
The S-3 ( Georgian : ს -3) is a main road in Georgia that runs through the Caucasus . The road leads from the S-1 at Mtskheta past Dusheti to the Russian border and is thus part of the Georgian Military Road . In Russia, the road continues as the A161 to Vladikavkaz .
The entire S-3 is part of the E117 .
history
In the days of the Soviet Union , the S-3 was an important link over the mountains of the Caucasus, in fact the only main thoroughfare between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea . It's also a relatively easy route with a pass of 2,379 meters. The road was designated as the A301 and ran from Vladikavkaz to Tbilisi. Since 1991 the road has been located on the territory of the states of Russia and Georgia. About three quarters of the former A301 is in Georgia and has been renamed the S-3. Since 1992 it has also been the only route between Georgia and Russia. The border is not always open, depending on the political climate between the two countries.
