Gudauri was originally a post station below the nearby Cross Pass , where the stagecoaches between Tbilisi and Wladikawkas changed horses. In the 1970s, the Georgian children's ski school settled down and built the first cable car .

The development into a holiday resort began in 1980 on the basis of an opinion by the Italian tourism experts Hugo Iling and Giuseppe Kanestrini, who explored the possibilities of winter sports in Georgia on behalf of the Georgian government. In 1988 Austrian and Swedish investors built a four-star ski and sports hotel with 300 beds, a swimming pool, bowling alley, indoor tennis center and ski lifts for around EUR 30 million. In addition to this four-star hotel, Gudauri has other hotels, guest houses and huts. Further hotels and apartment houses are being built along the main street. The number of visitors has grown annually since 2004. Tourists come mainly from the USA , Germany , Austria , Israel , Russia and Turkey .

The ski station has eight marked and regularly maintained slopes. They lie at an altitude of 1900  m to 3260  m . Its total length is 19 kilometers, the longest is five kilometers. They are marked as blue, red and black according to Western European standards.

Five chairlifts from the Austrian manufacturer Doppelmayr with three or four seats next to each other have a total transport capacity of around 6000 people per hour. They are in operation from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. On March 16, 2018, there was an incident at the 4- seater Sadzele chairlift : the lift reversed at high speed and threw numerous people out of their chairs at the valley station; about a dozen were injured.

The place has made a name for itself for heli- skiing because there is no danger of avalanches on the slopes or rocks under the deep snow. A Swiss and Austrian company brings skiers and snowboarders in the area around Gudauri up to an altitude of 4400  m . Popular destinations are slopes near Mount Kazbek , Trusso Gorge , Ksani Gorge , Liachwi Gorge, Mepiskalo Plateau and Gudamakari Gorge . There are also opportunities for paragliding .

The Fédération Internationale de Ski  (FIS) has designated slopes for slalom, giant slalom, super giant slalom and downhill skiing. Since the 1980s, three FIS competitions and two Soviet ski championships have been held in Gudauri .

The winter season lasts from December to mid-April. The snow cover averages 1.5 meters. In the 2004/2005 winter season, the snow was around five meters high here. If there is heavy snowfall in winter, you can still ski in May.
