List of highways in Georgia
The main routes in Georgia's trunk road network are oriented towards the capital Tbilisi , where more than a quarter of the population of Georgia lives, and run from there towards the borders with the neighboring states of Azerbaijan (2 border crossings ), Armenia (3), Turkey (2) and Russia (3, two of which are closed to international traffic) or branch off from these. Of these streets there are twelve consecutively numbered, which are marked with the Georgian letter ს , Latin S , which stands for S aertaschorisso mnischwnelobis gsa ( Georgian საერთაშორისო მნიშვნელობის გზა , street of international importance ). The main routes are mostly marked in Georgian and Latin script.
Several of the roads also have numbers of the European trunk road network along their entire length or on parts of them , which are shown on the road signs next to the Georgian numbers. Only a few sections have been developed as autobahns or similar to autobahns ( Georgian საქართველოს საავტომობილო მაგისტრალი , Sakartvelos saaktomobilo magistrali ), mainly in the Tbilisi area, for example the Tbilisi – Gori section of the S1 . These sections do not have any different or additional identification by numbers, but they are signposted in green instead of blue.
Two of the roads of international importance (S 1 and S 10) run through the territory of the de facto independent republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which are recognized by only a few states . Because of the conflict over these areas, the crossings from the Georgian "heartland" to them are closed and there is currently no traffic between central Georgia and the border crossings to Russia. These border crossings currently only serve traffic between Russia and Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The next higher road category comprises the trunk roads of national importance ( Georgian შიდასახელმწიფოებრივი მნიშვნელობის გზა , Sch idasachelmzipoebriwi mnischwnelobis gsa ), which are marked accordingly with the Georgian letter შ (corresponding to Sch ).
