Sestaponi ( Georgian ზესტაფონი ) is a city in Georgia .

geography

Sestaponi is located near the cities of Kutaisi and Chiatura in the Imereti region . It has 20,814 inhabitants.

history

On August 1, 1871, the first section of the oldest railway line in Georgia between Tbilisi and Sestaponi went into operation. On October 10, 1872, the next section from Sestaponi to Poti followed . On May 2, 1883, the Poti – Baku railway line was completed. In 1895, the first section came the branching here railway Zestaponi-Sachkhere added, then a narrow-gauge railway , which later on the customary broad gauge umgespurt was. Sestaponi was thus an important train station , which gave its further development a boost.
