Kareli ( Georgian ქარელი ) is a city in central Georgia .

geography

It is located in the Inner Kartlien region , on the right side of the Kura River (Mtkvari), 94 km west of the capital Tbilisi and 20 km west of the city of Gori . Since 1939 it has been the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name . In 2014 Kareli had 6,654 residents.

The climate in Kareli is temperate.

history

The oldest surviving mention of Kareli comes from 1715. It belonged to the noble family Zizishvili .

In 1872 the Poti – Baku railway was opened, and Kareli was given a train station .

Kareli acquired city status in 1981.
