The municipality Kareli ( Georgian ქარელის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Karelis munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Inner Kartlien region in the central part of Georgia .

The administrative center of Kareli Municipality is the city of Kareli . The area is 1092.1 km².
In the north it is de jure bounded by the municipality of Jawa , in the east by the municipality of Gori , in the south by the municipality of Borjomi of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region , in the west by the municipality of Chaschuri and in the northwest by the municipality of Sashchere in the Imereti region . De facto, the northern part, bordering the municipalities of Dschawa and Satschere , belongs to the Republic of South Ossetia, which is recognized by only a few states as Snaur Rajon (Georgian Snaur, formerly also known as Qornissi Rajon ) . A part of this area with four villages around the village of Auneu (Georgian Awnewi ) with a total of 1591 inhabitants (2002) was under Georgian control until the Caucasus War in 2008 , but was then taken by South Ossetian forces.

The largest localities besides the city of Kareli (6654 inhabitants) are the Minor town (Georgian daba, დაბა ) Agara and the villages Dirbi , Kwenatkoza and Ruissi (2014), each with over 2000 inhabitants .
The municipality is divided into the independent capital Kareli as well as 17 municipalities (for the minor city referred to as "territorial organ ", Georgian teritoriuli organo, ტერიტორიული ორგანო , for the villages temi, bei or simply "village", Georgian sopeli, სოფელი ) with a total of 82 villages, eight of which have no permanent residents:
