The municipality of Lagodechi ( Georgian ლაგოდეხის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Lagodechis munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Kakheti region in the far east of Georgia .

The administrative center of Lagodechi Municipality is the small town of Lagodechi . The 890.2 km² municipality of Lagodechi borders Azerbaijan in the east, the Republic of Dagestan of the Russian Federation in the north, the Qwareli municipality in the west, the Gurdschaani municipality in the south-west and the Sighnaghi municipality in the south .
The municipality extends in the area of the northeast flank of the Alasani Basin ; the eponymous river Alasani marks the southwestern border of the municipality. In the north, the terrain rises to the main ridge of the Greater Caucasus , on which the state border with Russia runs. The highest point in this area is a 3486 m high nameless summit a little north of the 3428 m high Chotschaldag; both are on the border with Russia not far from the triangle with Azerbaijan.
The Lagodechi National Park , which was founded in 1912, takes up a large part of the mountainous area of the municipality (around 20% of the total area) .
From the city of Lagodechi, via the S5 , a border crossing that was reopened in 2008 after renovations enables entry into Azerbaijan.

The municipality has 41,678 inhabitants (2014); this is almost a fifth less than in the previous census in 2002 (51,066).

The largest settlements besides the city of Lagodechi (5918 inhabitants) are the villages of Apeni , Gandschala , Kabali , Kartubani , Qarajala and Usuntala (2014) with over 1500 inhabitants each .
