The municipality Ambrolauri ( Georgian ამბროლაურის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Ambrolauris munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Ratscha-Letschchumi region and Lower Vanetia in northern Georgia .

geography

The administrative center of the municipality is the small town of Ambrolauri , which, as the regional capital, has not been part of the municipality since 2014 and is now directly subordinate to the region. The 1142 km² municipality borders on the Zageri municipality in the west, the Lentechi municipality in the north and the Oni municipality in the east , all also in the Ratscha-Letschchumi region and Lower Svaneti. From the southwest to the southeast, the municipality is bounded by the municipalities of Zqaltubo , Tqibuli , Chiatura and Satschchere , which belong to the Imereti region .

The municipality extends in the western part of the historical Ratscha region in the valley of the Rioni and its tributaries, from above the confluence of the Luchuniszqali to above the confluence of the Ladschanuri . From the southern part of the historical province of Svaneti , called Lower Svanetia (Georgian Kwemo Svaneti ), today the municipality of Lentechi, the municipality is separated in the north by the Letschchumi Mountains , which also have its highest peak there with the 3584  m high Samerzchle. The ridge of the Ratscha Mountains stretches along the southern border of the municipality , which, together with the Sazalike, reaches a height of 1997  m on this section . In the southern part of the municipality below the Ratscha ridge is an extensive karst plateau with the Schaora reservoir (Georgian შაორის წყალსაცავი , Schaoris zqalsazawi ) at 1130  m , which was flooded in the 1950s .

history

The area of the municipality corresponds to the western part of the historical province of Ratcha, which was subordinate to local princes from the 11th to 15th centuries during the time of the unified Georgian feudal state, who temporarily ruled over the northwestern neighboring Svaneti. After the disintegration of the united kingdom Racha was Lehns principality of the Kingdom of Imereti . In 1810 the area with Imeretia came to the Russian Empire and subsequently formed the Ujesd Ratscha in the Kutais governorate .

The Ujesd existed until the early years of the Soviet Union . From 1928 onwards there were several short-lived administrative changes, until finally in October 1930 the independent Rajon Ambrolauri was spun off. On April 29, 1991, the area was severely affected by the worst earthquake ever recorded in this part of the Caucasus (magnitude 7.0 on the Richter scale ; MSK IX). In 1995 the Ambrolauri Rajon was assigned to the newly formed region of Ratscha-Letschchumi and Lower Svaneti and in 2006 it was transformed into a municipality.

traffic

The main traffic artery of the municipality is the national road Sch16, which follows the Rioni from Kutaisi to Oni and continues up to the Mamisson Pass on the state border with Russia ( შ 16 , interrupted before the border due to the South Ossetia conflict). In Ambrolauri, the Sch17 ( შ 17 ) branches off in a southerly direction, which crosses the karst plateau and the 1217  m high Naqerali pass of the Ratscha Mountains and continues via Tqibuli to Kutaisi. The route from the Mamisson Pass via Oni, Ambrolauri and Tqibuli to Kutaisi corresponds to the historic Ossetian military road .

The nearest railway station is also in Tqibuli, the end point of a branch line from Rioni via Kutaisi since 1887 .
