The municipality Sighnaghi ( Georgian სიღნაღის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Sighnaghis munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Kakheti region in eastern Georgia .
geography
The administrative center of Sighnaghi Municipality is the small town of Sighnaghi , one of the smallest cities in Georgia. In the west and north-west the 1251 km² large municipality is bounded by the municipalities of Sagaredscho and Gurdschaani , in the north by the Lagodechi and in the southeast by the Dedopliszqaro , all also in the Kakheti region. It borders the Republic of Azerbaijan in the northeast along the Alazani River and across the Iori River in the southwest .
The Gombori ridge runs through the central part of the municipality , in this section a mostly wooded low mountain range , with the 1087 m high Tschotori near Sighnaghi as the highest peak in the area. In fact all localities of the municipality are in this mountain range or on both sides directly at its foot. Northeast of the ridge to the east of the area, the Alasani Basin extends to the river of the same name with the state border with Azerbaijan. The area southwest of the mountains is occupied by the dry and sparsely populated Iori highlands .
Population and administrative division
With 29,948 inhabitants (2014), the population has fallen by almost a third compared to the previous census (43,587 inhabitants in 2002).
