The municipality of Tschchorozqu ( Georgian ჩხოროწყუს მუნიციპალიტეტი , Tschchorozqus munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Mingrelia and Upper Svaneti region in western Georgia .

The administrative center of the municipality of Tschchorozqu is the eponymous minor city (Georgian daba , დაბა ) Tschchorozqu .

In the east, the municipality of Chchorozqu, which covers 619.4 km², is bounded by the municipality of Martwili , in the south to the southwest on relatively short sections by the municipalities of Senaki , Chobi and Zugdidi , in the west by the municipality of Zalendschicha , all of which belongs to Mingrelia, and in the north of the Upper Svanetian Municipality of Mestia is limited. In the northeast it borders on the municipality of Lentechi in the Ratscha-Letschchumi region and Lower Swanetia .

The municipality occupies the valley of the Chobiszqali River and most of its catchment area from the source in the Egrissi Mountains to the confluence of the left tributary Ochchomuri above the Colchian Plain . All localities are in the southern half of the area; to the north of this, the terrain rises steeply from around 300 to over 1000  m above sea level, and continues to the partially glaciated ridges of the Egrissi Mountains at over 3000  m . In the northwest of the municipality lies on the border with the municipality of tsalenjikha with 3226  m highest peak Tschitagwelaschi .

Population and administrative division

With 22,309 inhabitants (2014), the population has fallen by over a quarter compared to the previous census (30,124 inhabitants in 2002), well above the national average. Before that, the number of inhabitants had remained at the same level with relatively small fluctuations since at least the 1930s (28,578 inhabitants in 1939).

The population is almost mono-ethnic Georgian (about 99.6%); there are also a small number of Russians , Ukrainians and Abkhazians .

The largest localities besides the main town of Chchorozqu (3141 inhabitants) are the villages of Chabume , Kweda Tschchorozqu , Lessitschine and Muchuri (2014), each with over 1000 inhabitants .

The municipality is divided into 13 municipalities (called “territorial organ ” for the minority town, Georgian teritoriuli organo, ტერიტორიული ორგანო , for the villages Georgian temi, თემი or simply “village”, Georgian sopeli, სოფელი ) with a total of 31 localities :

1 Territorial organ with a minority town

history

After the fall of the Kingdom of Georgia from the 16th century until the 19th century, the area belonged to the Principality of Mingrelia . While Georgia was part of the Russian Empire and until the early years of the Soviet Union , it was part of the Ujesds Zugdidi of the Kutais Governorate . In 1929 alone was Rajon Tschchorozqu first spun off, dissolved again later and re-created on January 1, 1940th After another temporary dissolution in 1962, the administrative unit has existed continuously since December 23, 1964. After the independence of Georgia in 1995 the Rajon was assigned to the newly formed region of Mingrelia and Upper Svaneti and in 2006 it was converted into a municipality.

The national road Sch6 ( შ 6 ) runs through the southern part of the municipality with the main town of Chchorozqu and continues in an arc via Zalendschicha to Zugdidi when coming from the neighboring administrative center of Senaki to the south ; in Senaki and Zugdidi there is a connection to the international trunk road S1 ( ს 1 ). There is a direct connection to Zugdidi, 25 km from Tschchorozqu, where the train station closest to the municipality is located, via the national road Sch84 ( შ 84 ), while the Sch85 ( შ 85 ) leads to Martwili , which is located to the east . From the southern part of the municipality, the Sch87 ( შ 87 ) follows the Chobiszqali river down to Chobi , again on the S1 international trunk road.
