Senaki ( Georgian სენაკი ) is a city in western Georgia .
Geographical location
Senaki is located in the Mingrelia and Upper Svaneti region , 294 kilometers from Tbilisi in the Colchian Plain and has 21,596 inhabitants (as of 2014).
history
In 1872 the Senaki was connected to the railway . In 1921 it received city rights. From 1935 (according to other information already in 1933) to 1976 the city was called after the Georgian communist Micha Zchakaia (1865-1950) Micha Zchakaia (Georgian მიხა ცხაკაია ; Russian Миха Цхакая , Micha Zchakaja ), from 1976 to 1989 shortened to Zchakaia.
In the Georgian civil war in 1993 the city and airport were fiercely contested. On October 25th, the Russian army captured the city. On October 30th, it fell back into the hands of the supporters of the ousted President Zviad Gamsachurdia . After being bombed by the Russian air force , they finally had to give up the city on November 3rd. Looting and civilian deaths occurred. In 1998, Colonel Akaki Eliawa led another revolt against the Georgian government in Senaki, which also failed.

The station Senaki is located on the railway line Poti-Baku . It is the separation station for the Senaki – Adler railway line , which used to be the shortest connection from Georgia to Moscow . Due to the secession of Abkhazia , the route is interrupted at the Enguri river , and the bridge is destroyed.
The city is on Europastrasse 60 .
economy
There is a machine and carpet factory in the city. Various agricultural products such as wine , tea and milk are processed.
The Georgian Air Force operates the Kolchi military airfield near Senaki .
Culture
The Georgian Technical University (GTU) has a branch in Senaki.
Twin cities
Senaki has been a twin town of Rakvere in Estonia since 1996 .
