The Georgian Technical University - GTU ( Georgian საქართველოს ტექნიკური უნივერსიტეტი - სტუ Sakartwelos Teknikuri Uniwersiteti - STU ) in Tbilisi is the largest technical university in Georgia and Transcaucasia .

In 1922, the Polytechnic Faculty of Tbilisi State University was established. As the Georgian Polytechnic Institute , the Faculty became an independent educational institution in 1928. The first rector was David Kandelaki . Depending on the changing political framework, it was given new names: 1933 Transcaucasian Industrial Institute , 1936 Georgian Industrial Institute , 1947 SM Kirov Polytechnic Institute , 1956 finally WI Lenin Georgian Polytechnic Institute . In 1992 the institute became the Georgian Technical University .

The university employs 120 professors and 500 academic staff. These work at nine faculties, in 38 research laboratories and centers and the Polytechnic Institute in Batumi . The university has an international German-language institute for economics and law and a French-language institute for computer science .

Prior to 1990, the focus of scientific work was on preparatory work for the armaments industry of the Soviet Union in the areas of communication and mechanical engineering. Strong capacities were concentrated at the Institute for Cosmic Construction and the laboratory for pressure and low-temperature mechanical engineering created for space travel . Meanwhile, civil engineering , power engineering , telecommunications , architecture , mining , geology , technical chemistry , metallurgy , automotive engineering , aerospace engineering , mechanical engineering , computer science and humanities taught.

Associated with the GTU are the Georgian University of Social Sciences , the Caucasus Business School and a Cisco Networking Academy .

Particular attention is paid to the "German-speaking Faculty for Business and Law", which was created based on the model of the Business Law Department at the University of Lüneburg. The lectures are held in German only.
