Giorgi Baramidse ( Georgian გიორგი ბარამიძე ; born January 5, 1968 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian politician ( National Movement - Democrats ). The chemical technologist was Minister of Defense of Georgia from June 10 to December 14, 2004. Since December 15, 2004, he has been Vice Prime Minister and Minister of State for Euro-Atlantic Integration.

Life

Baramidse studied chemical technology at the Georgian Polytechnic Institute in Tbilisi, and was a co-founder and leader of the student movement there in the late 1980s. In 1992 he graduated as an engineer . In 1995 he studied at the George Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In 1998 and 1999 he was a research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy (ISD) at Georgetown University in Washington, DC

In 1990 Baramidse was a co-founder of the Georgian Green Party , its executive director in 1991 and 1992. In 1993 he united with his party and the followers of President Eduard Shevardnadze to form the Georgian Citizens' Union and became its deputy chairman. In 1995 and 1996 he was Secretary General. In 2002 he moved to the opposition party United Democrats and was elected to the board of directors under Zurab Schwania .

From 1992 to 2003 he was a member of the Georgian Parliament for three legislative terms. He was secretary of the parliamentary committee on human rights and national minorities (1992–1995), chairman of the committee of inquiry into corruption (1995–1999) and chairman of the defense committee (1999–2003). In 1996 he was group chairman of the Citizens' Union , in May 2002 group chairman of the newly formed United Democrats .

In November 2003 he won a direct mandate in the constituency of Tbilisi-Didube as a candidate for the Burjanadze Democrats . On February 17, 2004, Parliament initially elected him Minister of the Interior at the proposal of President Mikheil Saakashvili . Baramidze played a leading role in the solution of the conflict with Adjara , which led to the replacement of the ruler Aslan Abashidze . On June 10, 2004, he became his country's defense minister . On December 15, 2004, President Saakashvili appointed him Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Euro-Atlantic Integration. After the death of Zurab Schwania he was Prime Minister of Georgia from February 3 to 17, 2005.

Baramidze is considered a sharp critic of Russian policy in the South Caucasus. In December 2000, he declared that Georgia must do everything possible to expand cooperation with NATO , even if it angered Russia .

Baramidse is married and has one daughter. He speaks English, Russian and French.
