Obermörmter is the northernmost district of the city of Xanten and, together with Vynen and the surrounding area, forms the district of Vynen / Obermörmter. Obermörmter is located directly on the Rheinbogen , which turns off to Rees . The place is about 9 km north-northwest of the Xanten city center in the immediate vicinity of the FFH area Reeser Schanz .

history

Obermörmter is an old fishing village with a documented age of over 2,000 years. In the Middle Ages, Rönne Castle stood in Obermörmter and housed vassals of Count Gerhard I von Geldern . Presumably there was also a ford through the Rhine. In 1331 the place was sold to the Bishop of Utrecht . After him, the Counts of Kleve and from 1652 the Electors of Brandenburg were feudal lords over the "Rönne rule". The ruins of Rönne Castle sank into the Rhine at the beginning of the 17th century, which, when its river bed was shifted, also washed over parts of the village.

Today the place is characterized by six campsites and the church of St. Petrus . The peasantry is the place of residence of about 400 inhabitants; Dairy farming, pig fattening and camping tourism are the main sources of income.

coat of arms

Blazon : In gold (yellow) a red key with the beard at the top right, a black six-pointed star in front and behind, above in the head of the shield a black four-toothed tournament collar on the left; in the blue base of the shield, separated by a wavy line, a silver (white) salmon.

Meaning: The colors gold (yellow) and black remind of the affiliation to the county of Moers . The battlements of the tournament collar are reminiscent of Rönne Castle. The two stars symbolize the former location of Obermörmer on both sides of the Rhine. The key stands for the patron saint, St. Petrus und der Salmon is reminiscent of the fishing on the Rhine for the place known as the fishing village.

Attractions

The small town is of great tourist interest for those looking for relaxation because of its long connection to the Rhine . It is also the starting point for bike tours in the surrounding towns; Kalkar , Moyland Castle, Xanten and the Xanten Archaeological Park , APX for short, are only a few kilometers away.
