Gerhard III. from Wassenberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerhard III. von Wassenberg (Gerhard I. von Geldern, the Flaminius) (* around 1068 , † October 16, 1129 ) was the first Count von Geldern of the Flamenses family .

His father was probably Count Heinrich III. von Wassenberg , in a different opinion Dietrich I. Flamen . Gerhard was mentioned in 1085 as Count von Wassenberg , and in 1096 for the first time as "Count of Geldern ". The title " Landgraf " also appears in 1096. He is considered to be the progenitor of the Counts of Geldern from the Wassenberg family (the Flamenses), which died out in the male line in 1371.

Gerhard named himself alternately after Wassenberg (Gerhard III. Von Wassenberg) and after Geldern (Gerhard I. von Geldern) until 1118 Geldern prevailed in the naming. As the owner of the imperial bailiwick , as church bailiff and as allodial landowner, Gerhard felt compelled to shift the focus of his sphere of influence and to call himself Count von Geldern (1096). As a result of this shift in focus, Geldern Castle, which can only be proven to have been built in 1237, was probably built during this period . Gerhard I von Geldern was next to the Duke of Brabant and the Count of Luxembourg-Namur the largest secular territorial lord in Lower Lorraine. As the only sovereign in this region, he remained strictly imperial.

The time of Gerhard I's death is unknown (after 1129), and it is not clear from when a responsible successor was available to him. After Euler and Renn he died in 1117/1118. 1129 of spaceship finds only the Count Gerhard von Geldern, Regesta Imperii (December 25, 1128) also knows only the counts of money, so an earlier death of Gerhard's assume I of money.

Marriages and children

After 1086 he married Clementia von Poitou gt. Von Gleiberg (* 1046/59, † after 1129), daughter of Count Wilhelm VII. Of Poitou (1023-1058), Duke of Aquitaine, and the Ermesinde of Longwy († after 1058) , Widow of Count Conrad I of Luxembourg († 1086). Research seriously doubts that children emerged from this - presumably purely formal - marriage.

His children - probably from an unknown connection - were:

  • Jolante (* around 1090); married 1.) around 1107 Count Balduin III. (Hainaut) ; and 2.) around 1122 Gottfried de Bouchain, Burgrave of Valenciennes (cf. Ostervant , Gottfried II.). Since Jolante was born around 1090 and the marriage with Clementia von Poitou was already concluded around 1086, Jolante is probably the daughter of what is probably the only marriage of Gerhard von Geldern.
  • Jutta / Judith (* around 1090, † June 24, 1151), heiress of Wassenberg; ⚭ 1110 Walram III. (Limburg)
  • Gerhard II. (Geldern) , the Tall One.
  • ? Adelheid ⚭ Ekbert Graf von Tecklenburg ; see. Daughter of Walram III. (Limburg)
