Gerhard II. (Geldern)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerhard II von Geldern Count von Wassenberg , called the Tall One (* around 1090/1095; † on October 24th around the year 1131) was a Geldrian regent.

Gerhard II von Geldern was in the count of those von Wassenberg Gerhard IV. His father was Gerhard I. von Geldern or Gerhard III. von Wassenberg , who must have lived until at least 1129. It is not possible to determine when the two Gerharde died and whether Gerhard II exercised the count's rights. Between March 1131 and April 9, 1138 there is no source evidence for a Geldrian count, until then at Easter 1138 Heinrich I , the son of Gerhard II, is mentioned as Count von Geldern. According to the sources available to date, it cannot be decided whether the Gerharde, documented between 1085 and 1131, are a person or not.

Gerhard II married Ermengarde († 1138), the daughter of Count Otto II of Zutphen and heiress of the County of Zutphen , whose territory east of the central IJssel had numerous outposts in Friesland, Westphalia and the Rhineland. Gerhard asserted this inheritance against the Bishop of Munster and relied mainly on Brabant.

Gerhard is buried in the church in Wassenberg.
