Conrad I (Luxembourg)

Conrad I (around 1040 - August 8, 1086 ) was Count of Luxembourg from 1059 to 1086 . He was the firstborn of Count Giselbert .

Life

Conrad I succeeded his father as the ruling Count of Luxembourg in 1059 after his father's death. One of his first (known) acts was that he is said to have captured Archbishop Eberhard von Trier and brought him to Lucilinburhuc Castle . He was then by Pope . Nicholas II with excommunication occupied.

On July 6, 1083, Konrad founded the Benedictine Abbey Altmünster ("Almënster"). He gave the monastery five Meierhöfe , the fishing rights on the Péitruss and the Uelzecht , and for the mill on the Urecht construction and firewood from the Grengewald .

In 1085 he moved to the Holy Land . He died in Italy in 1086 while returning home . His body was brought to the Luxemburg in 1090 and buried in the crypt of the Altmünster Abbey.

Marriage and offspring

Konrad was married to Clémence von Poitiers, a daughter of Guillaume l'Aigret , Duke of Aquitaine , from the Ramnulfiden family . Children from this and possibly another marriage were:

  • Heinrich († 1096), as Heinrich III. Successor to his father as Count of Luxembourg
  • Wilhelm († 1129), successor to his brother Heinrich after his death
  • Ermesinde († 1141)

The following children are mentioned in the literature: Mathilde, Rudolf, Konrad and Adalbert.
