Friedrich Ludwig Georg von Raumer (born May 14, 1781 in Wörlitz , † June 14, 1873 in Berlin ) was a German administrative lawyer , historian and politician .

Life

Raumer was the son of the chamber director and domain tenant Georg Friedrich von Raumer (1755–1822) and his wife Charlotte born. de Marées from Raguhn (1761–1811) and brother of the geologist and geographer Karl Georg von Raumer . He attended the Joachimsthalsche Gymnasium in Berlin. After graduating from high school, he studied law , camera science and political science as well as history at the Georg-August University in Göttingen and the Friedrichs University in Halle .

Internal administration

After completing his studies in 1801, he was trainee lawyer and government assessor (1804) at the Kurmärkische Kammer. From August 1806 to May 1809 he was head of a department of the domain chamber at Königs Wusterhausen . 1809 he became a Councilor of Potsdam . Finally, in 1810, at the instigation of State Minister Karl vom Stein zum Altenstein , Raumer was appointed to the Prussian Ministry of Finance, but a few months later he was transferred to the cabinet of State Chancellor Karl August von Hardenberg , whom he accompanied on several trips abroad. Due to his liberal, reform-oriented attitude, Raumer repeatedly came into conflict with the authorities. He therefore decided to take a different path in life.

Wroclaw

After graduating from the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg in 1811 as Dr. phil. received his doctorate , he was appointed to the chair of political science and history by the new Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University in Breslau . In 1818/19 he was its rector . In the meantime, between 1815 and 1817, he undertook several study trips through Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

Berlin

In 1819 he followed the call of the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin . He was elected rector for the years 1822/23 and 1842/43. He was dean of the faculty of philosophy four times . During this time he also made a number of larger study trips, such as those to France (1830), England (1835), Italy (1839) and the USA (1844), the results of which he put down in special works. He was also a member of the Prussian senior censorship board for a while, a task that he ended in 1831. Raumer taught in Berlin until his retirement in 1859, but then held lectures until shortly before his death.

Despite his teaching activities politically and socially ambitious , Raumer repeatedly drew attention with provocative speeches or essays. For example, a speech he gave on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Friedrich Wilhelm III's reign was allowed . in 1822, when he campaigned for a constitutional monarchy , could not be printed. He was also fined in 1828 for his criticism of the Prussian estates , and in 1832 he was denied a new rectorate due to his essay " Poland's Fall ". When he took Frederick the Great's Edict of Tolerance in a speech as an occasion to criticize King Friedrich Wilhelm IV who was present , this caused severe annoyance, whereupon Raumer resigned from the Prussian Academy of Sciences , which he had been the permanent secretary of the historical-philosophical class since 1827 had listened to.

In addition, Raumer has been involved in the renowned lawless society in Berlin since 1823 and was also closely associated with the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin as a sponsor from 1801 until his death . The establishment of public libraries can also be traced back to Raumer's impulse.

politics

As a member of the German Center Party , he was a member of the Berlin city council in 1847/48 . As a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly , he was envoy of the provisional central authority in France in 1848 and a member of the Gotha post-parliament in 1849 . Then he was appointed to the Prussian mansion for a few years .
