Günter Stock

Günter Stock (born February 7, 1944 in Šidski Banovci , today part of the municipality of Nijemci , Croatia ) is a German physiologist . From 2006 to 2015 he was President of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities , from 2008 to 2015 President of the Union of German Academies of Sciences . Since April 2012 he has been President of the All European Academies (ALLEA) and since October 2015 Chairman of the Board of the Einstein Foundation Berlin .

Life

Günter Stock studied medicine at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg from 1965 to 1970 . In 1970 he completed his studies with a state examination and a doctorate . He then worked as a research assistant at the I. Physiological Institute of the University of Heidelberg, where he qualified as a professor there, after a research stay at the University of Gothenburg , in 1978 in the subject of physiology. In 1980, he received a call on the Chair of Vegetative Physiology at the University of Heidelberg.

In 1983 he joined Schering AG as head of the main department of cardiovascular pharmacology and in 1987 took over the management of the local institute for pharmacology . In 1986 the Free University of Berlin appointed him an adjunct professor. From 1989 to 2005 he was a member of the Board of Management of Schering AG, where he was responsible for the corporate function research and development.

From 2006 to October 2015 Günter Stock was President of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, of which he has been a member since 1995. The strategic goals of Günter Stock's term of office included: the further expansion of research on future issues through interdisciplinary working groups, among others on the topics of the “Excellence Initiative”, “Genetic Technology Report” or “Future with Children - Fertility and Social Development”; the increased research and development of the cultural and historical heritage on a high scientific and methodological level and using the most modern instruments as well as future-oriented issues; the expansion of the dialogue between science and society, for example through the “Academy and School” initiative and “Annual Themes”, with which the Academy concentrates its own research activities and bundles the activities of other institutions under a common thematic umbrella.

Memberships

Günter Stock was a member of the Science Council from 1992 to 2007 and was Vice President and member of the Board of Directors of the Max Planck Society until 2011 . In 1995 he became a full member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. From 1999 to 2015 he was senator of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina , from 2001 to 2007 and from 2008 to 2015 he was a senator and member of the board of trustees of the German Research Foundation (DFG). He is also a member of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors (GDNÄ), since 2000 deputy chairman of the "Humboldt University Society", Association of Friends, Alumni and Supporters eV, since 2001 member of the Board of Trustees of Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1999 Günter Stock received an honorary doctorate from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , and in 2014 from the University of “Dimitrie Cantemir” in Bucharest .

In 2006 Günter Stock was awarded the Cross of Merit First Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his “outstanding personal commitment to science and research policy” .

In 2007 he was honored with the Order of Merit of the State of Berlin by the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit , in recognition and appreciation of his outstanding services to the city of Berlin . In 2012, Stock - also by Wowereit - was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
