The Rayon Sochumi ( Abkhaz Аҟәа араион Aqwa araion ; Russian Сухумский район Suchumski rayon , Georgian სოხუმის რაიონი Sochumis Raioni , Armenian Սուխումի շրջան Suchumi schrdschan ) is a Rayon ( administrative district ) in the disputed region Abchasien .

The administration of the Rajon is located in the city of Sukhumi , which does not belong to the Rajon itself and forms a separate administrative unit. The 60 villages of the Rajon were grouped into 11 village soviets during the Soviet period : Akhalscheni, Akhalsopeli, Besleti (center of Absaqwa), Eschera , Gumista (center of Achadara), Kelassuri, Odischi, Pschu , Schroma, Semo Eschera and Tawissupleba.

11,747 people live in Sukhumi Raion, including 61.4% Armenians , 24.8% Abkhazians , 7.3% Russians , 2.1% Georgians and 1.6% Greeks (2003 census). With an area of ​​1523 km², the population density is 7.7 inhabitants / km². In the Soviet census of 1989, before the outbreak of the Abkhazia conflict, the Rajon still had 39,765 inhabitants (26.1 per km²), of which 44.4% Georgians, 29.4% Armenians and 5.1% Abkhazians.

According to Georgian law, which is not effective in Abkhazia, the area of ​​the Rajon plus the city of Sukhumi has been the municipality of Sukhumi ( Georgian სოხუმის მუნიციპალიტეტი Sochumis munizipaliteti ) of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia since 2006 .
