The Black Sea near Eschera

Eschera ( Abkhazian Ешыра ; Russian Эшера ) is a village in Abkhazia with about 2140 inhabitants.

It is located in Sukhum district on the Black Sea , about 16 kilometers from the center of the capital Sukhum . Eschera is a well-known health resort, where the Russian painter Vasily Vereschagin already had his summer residence.

At the time of the Soviet Union, Eschera was an important Olympic base. Since 1993 the place belongs to the de facto independent Abkhazia, but like all of Abkhazia it is still claimed by Georgia . Eschera is the birthplace of Wladislaw Ardsinba , the first Abkhazian president.

The 2011 Abkhazian census found a population of 2141 people. 40.9% of them were Abkhazians , 40.8% Armenians and 10.9% Russians . Smaller minorities were Georgians (1.9%), Ukrainians (1.2%) and Greeks (0.6%).
