The municipality of Gori ( Georgian გორის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Goris munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Inner Kartlien region in the central part of Georgia .

geography

The administrative seat of the municipality is the city of Gori , which has not belonged to the municipality itself since 2014, but is now directly subordinate to it as the main and largest city of the Inner Kartlien region with 48,143 inhabitants. The area is 2327.2 km².

In the north, the municipality of Gori de jure is bounded by the municipality of Java , in the northeast by the municipality of Akhalgori , in the southeast by the municipality of Kaspi , in the south by the municipalities of Zalka and Borjomi of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region and in the west by the municipality of Kareli .

De facto, the northern part of the municipality bordering the municipalities of Jawa and Akhalgori as Tskhinvali Rajon and the city of Tskhinvali , which is independent of the rajon, belongs to the Republic of South Ossetia, which is only recognized by a few states (as well as the municipalities of Jawa and Akhalgori as the district of Dzau and Leningori as well as the northern part Kareli as Snaur Rajon ). A significant part of this area with 19 at that time mostly by Georgians inhabited villages in six municipalities (Beloti, Berula, Kemerti, Ksuissi, Kurta and Wanati together 13,320 inhabitants in 2002, during which time the municipalities Eredwi and Kurta combined) was up to the Caucasus 2008 war under Georgian control, but was then captured by South Ossetian forces. The places were largely destroyed.

Population and administrative division

The municipality has 77,549 inhabitants (2014) within the part controlled by Georgia.

Population development

Note: census data. The city of Gori was spun off from Rajon from 1950 to the 1990s, again from the municipality since 2014 (information in 1939 and 2002 with and without a city).

The largest towns in the municipality, each with over 2500 inhabitants, are the villages of Cheltubani , Chidistawi , Karaleti and Schindissi (2014).

The municipality is divided into 22 municipalities in the Georgian-controlled part (Georgian temi, თემი or simply "village", Georgian sopeli, სოფელი ) with a total of 136 localities, 21 of which have no permanent residents, mainly in the difficult-to-access southern part of the municipality, in the Trialeti Mountains :
