Dzau district
The Dzau Rajon ( Ossetian Дзауы район Dsauy rajon; Russian Дзауский район , Dzauski rajon; Georgian ჯავის რაიონი , Jawis raioni ) is the northernmost and one of four Rajons within the Republic of South Ossetia, which is recognized by only a few states . Its administrative seat and namesake is the urban-type settlement Dschawa , the largest place is Kwaissa (city according to South Ossetian law since 2007, minor city according to Georgian law , daba with name Kwaissi ).
With an area of 1448 km², the Rajon is the largest in South Ossetia. Since its creation as Rajon Dschawa (Russian Джавский район , Dschawski rajon ) in the 1930s in the South Ossetian Autonomous Region , the population has decreased continuously from 20,108 (1939), intensified since the beginning of the armed South Ossetian-Georgian conflict in 1991 to the last 6,567 ( 2015).

The area is still claimed by Georgia , but it has no actual sovereignty over the area. De jure , it largely belongs to the Georgian municipality of Jawa in the Inner Kartlien region , but the extreme northwest around Kwaissa to the municipality of Oni in the region of Ratcha-Letschchumi and Lower Vanetia and a small area around the village of Sinaguri to the municipality of Satschchere in the region of Imeretia . The latter with 256 inhabitants in 2002 was under Georgian control until the Caucasus War in 2008 ; since then, the raion again roughly covers the area of the original Rajon Jawa.
