history
It was one of the four Rajons of the South Ossetian Autonomous Region , but was called Staliniri Rajon (after Joseph Stalin ) after the interim name of Tskhinvalis until the 1960s . As a result of the abolition of the autonomy status in 1989/1990, the Tskhinvali Raion was assigned to the Gori Rajon (today Gori Municipality of the Inner Kartlien region ), with the city of Tskhinvali retaining the status of a city independent of the Rajon . According to the Georgian administrative structure, this is still valid de jure , the Tskhinval Raion does not exist in it. Tskhinval Raion was restored in the administrative structure of the Republic of South Ossetia; Initially, however, large parts of it were under Georgian control.
According to Human Rights Watch , most of the Georgian-settled villages were destroyed by Ossetian militias in 2008 during the Caucasus War. Before the war the population of the Rajon was given as a total of around 18,000 in 86 villages, of which 13,230 in the Georgian-controlled part of the 2002 census and 7,793 in 2015 by the South Ossetian authorities.
