Inner Kartlien ( Georgian შიდა ქართლი , Schida Kartli ; completely შიდა ქართლის მხარე , Schida Kartlis Mchare ) is a region in Georgia . The capital of the region is Gori . Inner Kartlien is divided into six municipalities (munizipaliteti) , which are named after their administrative seats Chaschuri , Jawa , Gori, Kareli , Kaspi and Tskhinvali .

The conflict in South Ossetia

The Republic of South Ossetia, which has been autonomous since 1922 and was proclaimed in 1990 during the period of the collapse of the Soviet Union , is largely located in the Inner Cartilia region . Mostly inhabited by Ossetians , South Ossetia is striving to separate itself from Georgia or to join the Russian republic of North Ossetia-Alania . South Ossetia was not recognized internationally for a long time, but in the course of the Caucasus War in 2008 it was recognized as an independent state by Russia on August 26, 2008 (at the same time as Abkhazia was recognized ), and later by some other states. About 95 percent of South Ossetians have Russian citizenship, which they have been able to acquire since the collapse of the USSR and independence from Georgia.

As a result of the conflict, parts of the municipalities of the Inner Cartoons are not within the sphere of influence of the Georgian central power, but are managed by South Ossetia in the form of administrative units that are in some cases differently tailored: the territory of the Jawa municipality as part of the Dzau district , the northern part of the Gori and Tskhinvali district as Tskhinval district , the northern part of Kareli Municipality as Snaur Raion .
