Sulchan Zinzadze ( Georgian სულხან ცინცაძე ; born August 23, 1925 in Gori ; † September 15, 1991 in Tbilisi ) was a Georgian composer and cellist .

Life

Until 1945 he studied cello at the music high school and at the Tbilisi Conservatory , then moved to the Moscow Conservatory until 1953 , where he also studied composition with Semjon Bogatyrjow . While still a student he began his career in the Georgian State String Quartet . His first composition was three miniatures for this quartet based on Georgian folk songs. They were an instant hit. From 1966 he was a lecturer at the Tbilisi Conservatory, whose direction he temporarily took over. In 1973 he became a professor of composition. He was also very active in the Georgian Composers' Union. The Georgian State String Quartet , the Georgian Chamber Orchestra Competition and the Gori Music School now bear his name. Zinzadze's music is influenced by Georgian folklore and the music of Shostakovich . Zinzadze's son Irakli is also a composer.
