Life
Semjon Bogatyrjow first graduated from 1907 to 1912 a law degree at the University of Kharkov. He then studied composition at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory with Jāzeps Vītols , Wassili Kalafati and Maximilian Steinberg until he graduated in 1915 . He then taught there himself as a lecturer. From 1917 to 1919 and from 1922 to 1941 he taught composition at the Kharkov Conservatory, from 1935 as a professor. During the war he worked at the Kiev Conservatory and was evacuated from there to Krasnoyarsk and Sverdlovsk . From 1943 until his death in 1960 he was a professor at the Moscow Conservatory , from 1949 also dean.
His main research area was the doctrine of counterpoint . Following up on Sergei Taneyev , he wrote two books on the subject - Двойной канон [Double Canon ] (1947) and Обратимый контрапункт [The Reversible Counterpoint] (1960). In addition, between 1951 and 1955 he completed Tchaikovsky's unfinished symphony in E flat major (1892). This reconstruction was premiered in Moscow in 1957, followed by the premiere in New York City in 1962 under Eugene Ormandy . Bogatyrjow was an influential teacher, his students included composers such as Isaak Dunajewski , Alemdar Karamanow , Sulchan Zinzadze , Dmytro Klebanow, Eduard Lasarew and Vyacheslav Ovchinnikow , but also musicologists such as Daniel Schitomirski and Yuri Cholopow .
As a composer he left orchestral works, chamber, piano and vocal music. Although he dealt intensively with the work of Arnold Schönberg and Paul Hindemith , his musical language remained committed to late Romanticism .
