Daniel Vladimirovich Zhitomirsky
Daniel Wladimirowitsch Schitomirski ( Russian Даниэль Владимирович Житомирский ; also Daniėl Vladimirovič Žitomirskij ), (born December 9th July / December 22nd 1906 greg. In Pavlohrad ; † June 27th 1992 musicologist from Moscow ) was a Russian musicologist and music critic from Moscow .
Schitomirski studied music theory with Semjon Bogatyrjow at the Kharkov Conservatory and composition with Nikolai Schiljajew and music history with Mikhail Ivanov-Borezki at the Moscow Conservatory . He was a recognized expert for the composer Robert Schumann and in general for the musical aesthetics of German Romanticism . Schitomirsky also worked intensively on the composers of the Soviet era, in particular on Dmitri Shostakovich . In 1966 Schitomirski received the Robert Schumann Prize from the city of Zwickau . Schitomirski has published an extremely extensive Schumann letter edition of almost 1,100 letters in Russian translation. As part of the first Stalinist culture campaign of 1936/37 against “formalism” in music, Zhitomirsky vilified the work of the Ukrainian composer Borys Lyatoschynskyj . Lyatoschynskyj reports this in his correspondence with the Russian composer Reinhold Glière .
