Margit L. McCorkle

Margit L. McCorkle , b. Lundstrom (born March 28, 1942 in Madison (Tennessee) ) is an American musicologist and pianist who did particularly well with catalog raisonnés by Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms . She lives in Vancouver .

Life

Born in the USA, Margit L. McCorkle moved to Vancouver in 1972 with her husband Donald M. McCorkle (1929–1978), Professor and Head of the Music Department at the University of British Columbia . She began her professional training as a concert pianist and harpsichordist and expanded it with a Ph.D. degree in musicology and music bibliography at the University of Maryland . There the McCorkles undertook joint source studies on the music of Johannes Brahms , which they continued in Vancouver from 1966 to 1978.

After the death of her husband, she began to prepare and compile a basic academic thematic directory of all of Johannes Brahms' works under the auspices of the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Arts. This extensive project was supported by well-known research funds from the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada and ultimately led to the publication of the catalog raisonné by G. Henle Verlag in Munich in 1984. Two years later, “in recognition of her special services to the German Musikliteratur ”awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon by the Federal Republic of Germany .

In 1989 McCorkle was encouraged to undertake a basic scientific directory of all of Robert Schumann's works , this time under the patronage of the Robert Schumann Society / Research Center in Düsseldorf and Zwickau, which was funded by the Peter Klöckner Foundation, Duisburg. This major project was already able to appear in print in 2003 as a joint publication by the publishers G. Henle, Munich, and Schott Music International, Mainz. McCorkle was honored for this in 2007 with the award of the Robert Schumann Prize of the city of Zwickau (as co-winner).

It has been pointed out on various occasions that Margit L. McCorkle is still the only one among musicologists and bibliographers who has presented two basic catalogs of works by great classical composers as a life's work.

Since 1973, her bibliography has included other monographs, articles and scientific contributions, to which she was invited by international conferences or for publications in connection with Brahms or Schumann. In addition, she was entrusted with editorial and editorial work on the publication of musical works and facsimiles of musical manuscripts by Brahms and Schumann. Her current academic activities focus on the English translation of German-language academic contributions to current text-critical editions of the works of Robert Schumann and Carl Maria von Weber (Schott Music International). She edited more than a dozen volumes for each of the two composers. She also works as a specialist translator for the music publishers G. Henle (Munich) and Breitkopf & Härtel (Wiesbaden).
