Gustáv Papp

Gustáv Papp (born September 28, 1919 in Čierny Balog , † October 7, 1997 in Bratislava ) was a Slovak opera singer (tenor). In 1984, Papp received the Robert Schumann Prize from the city of Zwickau .

Life

Papp first studied medicine at the University of Bratislava. There he passed his medical state examination and received his doctorate in medicine. He completed postgraduate studies and became a specialist in surgery. Then he studied singing at the music academies in Bratislava and Vienna . In 1948 he made his stage debut at the Slovak National Opera in Bratislava as José in Bizet's opera Carmen . For several decades he was one of the outstanding artists of this opera house. At the same time, Papp was a permanent guest singer at the Leipzig Opera House for many years . Here as well as at the Dresden State Opera he often sang Wagner roles. In particular, Papp was a specialist in heroic roles from German and Italian opera literature. He also mastered over twenty Slovak opera roles. At the Opera in Bratislava, he worked in several world premieres of works by Slovak composer Ján Cikker with 1954 in Juro Janosik , 1957 in Prince Bayazid and as a guest at the National Opera Prague in the Aufersteheung by Leo Tolstoy and 1987. The Insect Play again in Bratislava. He was also valued internationally as a concert singer on guest appearances in the CSSR, Hungary, the Soviet Union, Italy, Belgium and Yugoslavia. During his entire career he also practiced his medical work to a lesser extent.
