Jon W. Finson

Jon W. Finson (born November 4, 1950 in Chicago ) is an American musicologist .

Life

Jon W. Finson grew up in Northfield, Illinois . After attending New Trier High School in Winnetka , Illinois , he first studied orchestral conducting and singing at the University of Colorado Boulder College of Music ( Bachelor of Music 1973) and later musicology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison ( Master of Arts 1975). From 1975 to 1980 he was a student at the University of Chicago with an academic year in Vienna and Berlin (1977/78). In 1980 he defended his doctoral thesis ( Doctor of Philosophy ) on Robert Schumann in Chicago : "Robert Schumann: The creation of the symphonic works". During his doctoral studies, he received a grant from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Foundation for Music . He did his doctorate with Philip Gossett ( editor of the complete works of Rossini and Verdi ).

It was from 1978 for 35 years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill worked, where he is a professor as Professor and Adjunct Professor of American Studies had. As one of the most active Schumann researchers in the USA, he wrote a large number of essays on topics related to Robert Schumann. As early as 1978 he visited the Robert-Schumann-Haus in Zwickau. As an internationally recognized speaker , he was last active in 2010 at the International Schumann Conference in Zwickau .

Retired in 2013, Finson now lives in Florida .

Works

He became known through the publication of the first version of Schumann's Symphony in D minor in Wiesbaden in 2003 . Two of his previously published six books can be regarded as masterpieces of Robert Schumann research:

In addition, he is still working on various editions, has written a large number of his own articles and other publications, and has been involved in two translations and several reviews .

Prices

Together with Ulf Wallin, he received the Robert Schumann Prize of the City of Zwickau for 2013.
