Philip Gossett

Philip Edward Gossett (born September 27, 1941 in New York , † June 13, 2017 in Chicago ) was an American musicologist and professor at the University of Chicago .

Gossett conducted research primarily on 19th century opera. For his 2006 study Divas and Scholars: Performing Italian Opera. In 2007, he won the American Music Society's Best Book on Music award.

Gossett was editor of the complete editions of Gioachino Rossini and Giuseppe Verdi .

He has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1989 and of the American Philosophical Society since 2008 . Gossett was elected as a foreign member of the Kungliga Musikhögskolan i Stockholm in Sweden in 2008. In 2009 he became a corresponding member of the British Academy .
