Günther Leib

Günther Leib (born April 12, 1927 in Gotha ) is a German opera singer who specializes in baritone .

Life

Günther Leib began studying violin at the Erfurt Conservatory and in 1949 became the first violinist in the Gotha Regional Orchestra . He then took up his singing studies at the Weimar Conservatory with Alfred Brockhaus . He received his diploma as a concert and opera singer in 1952.

Günther Leib made his debut in 1952 in the theater of Köthen as Bartolo in the Barbiere di Siviglia and then sang at the theaters of Meiningen and Nordhausen , 1956–1957 at the opera house in Halle (Saale).

In 1957 he was engaged at the Dresden State Opera , and since 1961 he has been part of the ensemble of the Berlin State Opera .

He distinguished himself as an oratorio and lieder singer. In 1957 he sang Christ in the St. John Passion (BWV 245) by Johann Sebastian Bach under Franz Konwitschny in Italy. In 1958 he gave concerts in Egypt and England.

In 1963 he sang the baritone part in the Christmas Oratorio (Bach) with the Thomanerchor Leipzig under the direction of Thomas Cantor Erhard Mauersberger in the University Church in Leipzig (which was blown up in 1968). There is a black-and-white TV recording from GDR television.

Almost every year he took part in the Handel Festival in Halle (Saale) ( Radamisto and Poro by Georg Friedrich Handel ).

1974–1975 he sang Beckmesser in the Meistersinger at the Salzburg Easter Festival . In 1976 he gave the same role at the Metropolitan Opera in New York .

He has also made guest appearances at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, the Grand Opéra Paris , the National Opera Houses of Prague, Budapest and Sofia, and the State Operas of Hamburg, Stockholm and Helsinki.

In addition to the Beckmesser, the Guglielmo in Così fan tutte was his most lasting success. He also sang in Einstein by Paul Dessau .

From 1964 to 1976 Günther Leib was professor at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden , and since 1976 at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin .
