Sammy Hagar visited Cabo San Lucas in the early 1980s when the place was still a small fishing village. At that time there was only one hotel there, otherwise the place was not set up for tourists. On Hagar's second visit, he met Jorge Viana, who later became the manager of the cantina , and told him his vision of a small tequila bar in which he wanted to build a small stage so that he could play live when he felt like it. Viana wasn't convinced at first and only reacted politely. After Hagar had invited Viana to a concert in San Diego , California , he was able to convince him of his idea.

When Hagar became a member of Van Halen in 1986 , he continued to work on his idea and was inspired by the title Cabo Wabo . He and Viana looked for a suitable site for the club, found it, and launched a competition among local architects , which Marco Monroy won. He visited Hagar in Los Angeles and presented his design: Hagar was enthusiastic. However, he overlooked the fact that the design was in square meters and not the standard square feet in the United States at the time . While his club was being built in Cabo San Lucas, Hagar went on tour with Van Halen . When he returned to Cabo, he was surprised at the actual size of the club.

In order to celebrate a high-profile opening, he needed the help of the music channel MTV , which is why he asked the members of Van Halen to attend the opening. The group members, Edward Van Halen , Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony agreed, Hagar offered them a share of the club in return, which was accepted by everyone. The group's management retired from the company in 1994 after Hagar left the band and the Cantina became economically unattractive to them.

From then on, Hagar continued to run the establishment with Marco Monroy, who became his partner because he believed in the club's potential. Since Hagar was first in Cabo San Lucas, the place has tripled its size. The club is now not only of interest to tourists, but is also popular with local residents. In addition to a bar , the club offers various music events with DJs , concerts and local cuisine. In 1996 Hagar founded “Cabo Wabo Tequila”, of which he now sells four varieties ( Blanco, Reposado, Añejo and Uno ), which are also served in the Cabo Wabo Cantina.

On April 22nd, 2010 the club celebrated its twentieth anniversary.

Many celebrities have been guests in the cantina repeatedly, for example Matt Sorum , who celebrated his 50th birthday there, Bono from U2 , of course Hagar's current band Chickenfoot , Tommy Lee , Vince Neil , David Hasselhoff and many others. Especially the musicians among the guests often play more or less spontaneously with the "Wabos", the house band of Cabo Wabo Cantina. Sammy Hagar's birthday party, the so-called Birthday Bash, also takes place there every year.

The Cantina now has two branches, one in Las Vegas on the Las Vegas Strip and one in Lake Tahoe .
