The Las Vegas Strip is a section of Las Vegas Boulevard in Las Vegas , Nevada , which is known for its dense collection of luxury hotels and casinos . The 6.8 km-long "Strip" ( Engl. For strip) already located outside the city limits in the suburbs Paradise and Winchester . It begins in the south at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on Russell Road, not far from the “ Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas ” street sign, and ends at the Stratosphere Tower in the north on Sahara Avenue. From there, it's a little less than three miles to downtown Las Vegas and Fremont Street .

Hotels and casinos

The first casino hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, El Rancho Vegas, was built in 1939 and opened in 1941. It was destroyed by fire in 1960 and replaced in 1970 by the Hilton Grand Vacations Hotel, which still exists today. The second hotel was the New Frontier Hotel and Casino, which opened in 1942 and was demolished in 2007. The Flamingo Las Vegas opened its doors in 1946 and is still in operation today. Numerous hotels were opened in the 1950s, such as the Desert Inn or The Dunes , many of which no longer exist today. The Riviera Las Vegas opened in 1955, the first high-floor hotel on the Strip. The Caesars Palace followed in 1966, and the Circus Circus Hotel in 1968 . Numerous hotel openings were also made in the 1970s and 1980s, including Harrah's Las Vegas . The first so-called megaresort was the Mirage , which opened in 1989 . Since then, the Strip has overtaken Fremont Street , the old entertainment hub in downtown Las Vegas. Downtown Las Vegas itself has suffered considerable losses due to the boom on the Strip. Casino operators responded by renovating facades, building multiplex cinemas or creating new attractions such as the Fremont Street Experience , a giant dome that covers several blocks.

The Strip is now a world-famous entertainment mile, home to many of the largest casinos and most impressive hotels in the world. According to the number of rooms, many of the hotels are among the 20 largest in the world . As of June 2015, Las Vegas had almost 150,000 hotel rooms, around half of them on the Strip. Many of the hotels on the Strip are adventure hotels, the exterior and interior design of which follows a central theme. The Luxor with its pyramid and Sphinx statue is presented in the style of ancient Egypt , a copy of the Eiffel Tower stands in front of Paris Las Vegas and the typical sights of Venice have been recreated in the Venetian . Other well-known hotels on the Strip include the MGM Grand Hotel , Hotel Bellagio , Excalibur Hotel, and New York-New York Hotel . The only luxury hotels on the Strip, the Vdara , the Mandarin Oriental and the Four Seasons do not have a casino or slot machines . Also located at the southern beginning of the Las Vegas Strip is the Little Church of the West , where numerous celebrities said yes.

Since June 15, 2000, the Las Vegas Strip has been recognized by the US Department of Transportation as part of the National Scenic Byway program as an All-American Road , a street that is considered a landmark of national importance. Unlike most places in the US, the Strip allows you to drink alcohol on the street. However, alcohol in bottles or cans is not tolerated along the strip on public holidays such as the US National Day , Independence Day .
