The Dunes opened on May 23, 1955 as the tenth hotel on the Las Vegas Strip . In 1961 and 1979 a tower with additional rooms was built.

Famous entertainers, including Frank Sinatra , Judy Garland and Dean Martin , performed at the hotel in the 50s and 60s. German artists like Manuela and Heidi Brühl also had engagements in the Dunes.

In November 1992, The Dunes was sold to Mirage Resorts Inc. for US $ 75 million. On January 26, 1993 it was closed because it could no longer compete with the more modern mega- resorts .

On October 27, 1993, The Dunes was demolished by an explosion. A large fireworks display was lit as a supporting program for the demolition .

Today the Hotel Bellagio stands here .
